Installé tout près de l'ancienne place royale de Dijon et du palais des Ducs, dans l'un des plus beaux hôtels particuliers du XVIIe siècle, ce musée national doit son existence à deux collectionneurs passionnés, Maurice Magnin (1861-1939), haut magistrat parisien, et sa soeur Jeanne Magnin (1855-1937), peintre amateur et critique d'art.Soucieux de préserver l'âme des lieux, Maurice Magnin entreprend, dans les années 1930, de réaménager l'hôtel particulier pour y présenter sa collection d'oeuvres d'art sans altérer le caractère historique de la demeure. Aujourd'hui encore, les lieux ont conservé le charme si particulier d'une authentique maison de collectionneurs. La collection rassemble des oeuvres très variées mais surtout un fonds de plus de mille tableaux où se côtoient peintres de l'école du nord (Brueghel le jeune), oeuvres remarquables de Bologne, de Florence ou de Venise et grands noms de la peinture française du temps de Mazarin (Le Sueur, La Hyre).Si le Grand Siècle est à l'honneur au sein de la collection française, Jeanne et Maurice Magnin ont également aimé les esquisses peintes du XVIIIe siècle et ont eu à coeur de défendre des talents oubliés du XIXe, en particulier des années romantiques. Located near the former Place Royale and the Palais des Ducs in Dijon, in one of the finest town houses of the seventeenth century, this national museum owes its existence to two keen collectors : Maurice Magnin (1861-1939), a high-ranking Parisian magistrate, and his sister Jeanne Magnin (1855-1937), an amateur painter and art critic. Determined to preserve the spirit of the place, Maurice Magnin undertook, in the 1930s, the renovation of the town house so he could present his collection of artworks there without changing the historic nature of the residence. The buildings still have the distinctive charm of an authentic collector's home. The collection contains a wide variety of works, including more than a thousand paintings : works by painters from the Northern school (Brueghel the Younger), from Bologna, Florence and Venice, and by the big names of French painting of Cardinal Mazarin's time (Le Sueur, La Hyre). While the seventeenth century has pride of place in the French collection, Jeanne and Maurice Magnin also had a taste for the painted sketches of the eighteenth century and were eager to champion the forgotten talents of the nineteenth century, particularly those of the Romantic period.
