Veli(...)kovi(...) Le grand style et le tragique Vladimir Velickovic (1935-2019), Serbe naturalisé Français, s'affirme lors de la Biennale de Venise en 1972 comme l'un des plus importants artistes européens. Il offre une alternative au pop art et à l'hyperréalisme qui triomphaient alors. Le Fonds Hélène et Édouard Leclerc pour la Culture organise une rétrospective inédite embrassant la totalité de son oeuvre de peintre et de dessinateur. Velickovic a travaillé pendant deux ans, jusqu'à sa disparition soudaine, en étroite collaboration avec Jean-Luc Chalumeau, commissaire de l'exposition, à cette présentation titrée Le grand style et le tragique. S'y dévoile une peinture de la mort, de l'instant d'avant la mort ou de la souffrance intolérable, qui parvient à son bouleversant témoignage sur la condition humaine grâce à sa maîtrise de ce que l'on appelle le « grand style ». Peintre sans concession, il n'a atteint ce dernier qu'en méprisant toujours « la beauté petite et brève », selon le mot de Nietzsche. Les contributions originales des auteurs réunis dans ce livre - Amélie Adamo, Jean-Luc Nancy, Michel Onfray, Gérard Titus-Carmel - ainsi que les textes présentés en anthologie, et les nombreuses et étonnantes images d'archives rassemblées ici, contribuent à renouveler le regard porté sur un artiste exceptionnel. The grand style and the tragic Vladimir Velickovic (1935-2019), a Serbian having taken French nationality, was recognised, at the 1972 Venice Biennale as one of the most important European artists. He offered an alternative to the Pop Art and Hyperrealism that were all the trend at the time. The Fonds Hélène et Édouard Leclerc pour la Culture has organised an unprecedented retrospective embracing the totality of the artist's oeuvre. Velickovic had been working on it for two years when he died unexpectedly. He collaborated closely with Jean-Luc Chalumeau, the exhibition curator, on that presentation bearing the title : The grand style and the tragic. His work unveils painting of death, the moment preceding death and its unbearable suffering, and it represents a moving testimony on the human condition thanks to his mastery of what is called the « grand style ». An uncompromising painter, he only achieved that mastery by choosing to ignore « beauty that is small and fleeting » according to Nietzsche's expression. The original contributions of the authors gathered in this book - Amélie Adamo, Jean-Luc Nancy, Michel Onfray, Gérard Titus-Carmel - as well as the texts presented in an anthology, and the countless and surprising archival images collected here, contribute to revitalise looking at this exceptional artist.
