De sa naissance en 1929 à sa dissolution en 1958, l'Union des artistes modernes (UAM) rassemble de très nombreux membres animés par la volonté de « créer sans regarder en arrière » pour répondre aux besoins du beau et de l'utile pour tous. Parmi eux, des figures majeures comme Sonia et Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger, Pierre Chareau, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé ou Cassandre et bien d'autres architectes, décorateurs, créateurs de mobilier, peintres, sculpteurs, orfèvres, relieurs, graphistes et affichistes. Tous partagent l'idéal d'une synthèse des arts capable de répondre aux enjeux politiques et sociaux de leur temps, aux défis d'une nécessaire industrialisation et à la production de logements de masse pour imaginer de nouvelles manières d'habiter et de vivre. C'est l'histoire de ce mouvement et, au-delà, de la modernité française et de ses origines, que l'exposition du Centre Pompidou s'attache à retracer. From its creation in 1929 to its dissolution in 1958, the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) brought together a whole host of members, filled with the desire to « create without looking back » to respond to the needs of beauty and utility for all. Among them were major figures like Sonia and Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger, Pierre Chareau, obert Mallet-Stevens, Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé, or Cassandre and many other architects, decorators, furniture designers, painters, sculptors, gold and silversmiths, bookbinders, graphic designers, and poster designers. All of them shared the idea of a synthesis of the arts capable of responding to the political and social issues of their time, to the challenges of the requisite industrialisation and the production of mass housing in order to dream up new ways of living and residing. It is the story of that movement and, beyond it, French modernity and its origins, that the exhibition at the Centre Pompidou strives to retrace.
